5 out of 5 stars Great game, gotta say   August 1, 2010
Michael Doyle (PROVO, UT, US)
I have to say that this game is excellent. Before I start this review, I want to note that I actually have the game and am not like many of the 1-star reviewers that just want to bash the game.

The game follows the mantra: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." As far as gameplay, this is the original Starcraft with a few new units and better graphics. The strategy and gameplay are sound and the game is just fun. It seems like the game that the developers would have made if they could have 12 years ago. Now the technology is there and the game just comes off well.

To respond to some of the 1-star reviews- the game is NOT 1/3 of the game. This is the main game. It simply follows the story of the Terran relatively exclusively (although you do get to play as the Protoss in the campaign as well). It was smart to make the game Terran focused- it allowed for more story (rather than devoting 1/3 of the game disc for a shorter campaign from each faction). The game supports functionality of all three factions plus the great wings of liberty campaign. The Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void to-be-expansions will be just that, expansions. The current game is not simply the length of a 1/3 of a game. It is a full game. I paid $60 for the game (something I don't do often) and I don't regret it and I feel I got my money's worth for what wings of liberty came with.

No, the game doesn't have LAN or chatrooms or some of the other stuff of starcraft 1. Ok. That's fine. If Blizzard patches that, great. If not, okay too. I keep hearing the "no LAN" complaint. I say to that: how many people don't have an internet connection? I mean seriously. Get a router, set up a wireless network, and if you want to get your friends over, have them all get on that network and play. No, its not LAN, but it works.

This game, top to bottom, is great. If you need convincing, look at the critics (it got a 97 metacritic score) and not at the 1-star reviewers who are just bitter.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful game   August 1, 2010

Fantastic game. I never got into Starcraft I, but I think this one is tons of fun. I'm finished with the single player, and getting into online play. It's keeping me up way too late. :)

1 out of 5 stars An unfortunate disappointment   August 1, 2010

When this game was first announced, so early that it's comical, I was extremely excited, anyone that follows gaming seriously realizes a serious decline in the quality of games between 2002 - 2004, but Blizzard's games always appeared to be immune to the obvious lack of quality, Starcraft 2 marks the end of this trend. Blizzard apparently (almost as if a parody of a good game, and a quintessential representation of the failings of the majority of gaming) turned Starcraft 2 into the same garbage passed off by companies like EA, Sony, and Microsoft.

The downgrade of Battlenet 2 from Battlenet 1 is almost a joke, they removed chat functionality, LAN gameplay, game names, split the game into a trilogy to squeeze money out of the pockets of customers, and added unnecessary things to the game like connectivity to the websites Twitter and Facebook (two social networking sites). During beta they reduced the functionality of the game's interface, dumbing it down so that it has more in common with archaic game interfaces as to promote the idea that you're not just facing your opponent, but also the interface by reducing a player's control. For about 2 weeks there was a concrete plan to make players use their real names to post on the forums - an action that had its flaws revealed considerably by multiple invasions of the privacy of community leaders and other players; while the decision has been reversed, it is foreshadowing for what is sure to come. In the future there will be maps designated by as 'premium' that will cost money download (ironically the popular Warcraft 3 map, Defense of The Ancients has said would not 'premium' enough, despite the fact that that single map itself spawned entire full-fledged games).

Since the game will be released essentially 3 times, 300% of the original cost for likely 150% of the original content (actually it's probably much less than 150%), buying this game is only 1/3 of the complete game 3 years from now. As is there is no date for the expanded functionality of battlenet (and it will likely be expanded in the next games), functionality that theoretically should have been enabled at release.

I'll say again, during my 20 year experience (part of which is a career) with electronic gaming there is no game I was looking forward to more than Starcraft 2, but as I played through the beta, and as more was announced about the game, it looked less and less attractive Anyone that is planning to buy this game, I urge you not to do so, it is essentially incomplete, and with how this game looks on release, I can't imagine it will improve. At a price tag of 60 dollars, Blizzard has managed to make the sequel to the best game of all time overpriced. After reading this review, maybe in a few years there will be a battlechest, and the features Starcraft 2 rightfully should have had at launch will be in the game at that point. A better investment would be buying 60 dollars of Valve Corporation stock, which, as much as I hate to say it, is looking to be the sole contributor of quality PC games.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST PC GAME BY FAR!   August 1, 2010

This game is simply amazing. Don't fall for the negative comments about this game. Yeah theres no LAN so what. Battlenet has created a great multiplayer experience. People are also complaining about paying $60 for 1/3 of a game. We already knew it would only be 1/3 of a game, that's why it's call WINGS OF LIBERTY.
